Why Invest in Empowering Young Women and Girls of Color

SIS Circles strives to nurture safe and brave spaces for young women and girls of color so that they feel empowered to use their voices.

  • Education: Preparing young women of color for college and non-traditional education.

50% increase in high school graduation rates for Black girls and a 25% increase in college graduation rates for Black women.

Obtaining higher levels of education raises the socioeconomic stand-point.

  • Health: Providing accessible healthcare services and education to young women and girls of color.

84% of Black women who obtain higher levels of education are less likely to face food insecurities.

More access to education surrounding healthcare lowers breast cancer fatalities within the black community.

  • Wealth: Building wealth within minority communities to uplift young scholars.

Black women with a bachelor's degree are making a median income of $33 thousand (110% more income than their non-Hispanic White counterparts).

Value of Social/Emotional Empowerment

Social-emotional empowerment is incredibly valuable for Black and Brown girls. It can help them develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to navigate the challenges they may face as they grow and pursue their goals.

  • Increases emotional intelligence necessary for personal and professional relationships, such as kindness, sharing, and empathy.

  • Improves student attitudes toward school, and reduces depression and stress among students.

Supports the development of five key skills:

  1. self-awareness,

  2. self-management,

  3. social awareness,

  4. relationship skills,

  5. responsible decision making

  • Acknowledges, addresses, and supports healing from the ways people of color have been impacted by racism and systemic oppression. Acknowledges and addresses the impacts of generational trauma and systemic oppression while promoting a safe space for healing.

  • Greater self-awareness: Social, and emotional empowerment can help Black and Brown girls develop a better understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which can help them make better decisions and communicate more effectively with others.

  • Increased academic success: Social-emotional empowerment can help Black and Brown girls develop the self-regulation, motivation, and study skills they need to succeed academically.

Dream It

Sisters Inspiring Sisters ( SIS Circles, Inc. ) is dedicated to the development and self-improvement of young Black and Brown women and girls throughout the world.

Through workshops, programs, and leadership programs, SIS Circles aims to create a nurturing environment for middle and high school-age students so that they feel empowered to cultivate themselves into healthy, confident, and resilient women.

Black Graduate Magic

Build It

SIS Circles creates nurturing, safe spaces by engaging in classroom workshops with young women and girls in middle and high school. Our interns, selected from a pool of talented local Atlanta college students, work as peer facilitators in the classrooms leading programs surrounding the health, wellness, and enrichment of students through social-emotional learning and self-care.

These programs are the chosen method of execution due to the interpersonal connection it fosters with the students and the trust that connection will bring on, furthering the positive effects of the workshops. Only positive results will follow when the interns and the students create an environment in which each party can learn and grow in the pursuit of a better self.
